Design Approach, Part 2 - The Building as a Sequence of Spaces
I think of the building and its site as an integrated whole. A building is experienced sequentially through time as we move through a progression of spaces. The space we are currently in is informed by the space we have left behind and that which we see beyond. This sequence begins as we leave the public road and turn into our driveway and continues as we leave the vehicle and move from the outdoor space (courtyard for example) to a transitional space (porch) and into the building. I think carefully about the nature of each component of this sequence, shaping the size and proportion of the various spaces so that each space, pleasing in-itself, creates an enjoyable experience as we move from one space to the next.
